Participant Identification and Recruitment
Potential study participants were identified based on their participation in the PIN 3/3plus prenatal study. If women agreed to being contacted after they deliver, they were phoned around 6 weeks postpartum and the study was described. If they agreed to participate, an in-home visit was scheduled to occur around 3 months postpartum.
In-Home Interview at 3 Months Postpartum
Women were interviewed in their homes around 3 months postpartum and asked questions about the following:
- infant health and feeding
- current health status
- eating attitudes
- vitamin and supplement use
- tobacco and drug use
- psychosocial measures — depression, anxiety, sleep quality, perceived stress, support
- demographic info, household composition, income, participation in federal programs
- current student and/or employment status, maternity leave
- physical activity — work, recreational, and household activities, transportation
- body image
- neighborhood characteristics, physical activity facilities, food market locations
- physical measurements are taken
Nutrition Assessment
At the 3-month home visit, women were given a modified version of the Block Food Frequency Questionnaire to assess diet during the previous three months.
In-Home Interview at 12 Months Postpartum
Women were interviewed a second time in their homes at around the 12-month postpartum timeframe and asked questions similar to the 3-month interview, with the addition of the following:
- revised restraint scale
- food security
