Characteristics of the Population in PIN3 and PIN3plus
Data collection activities for the second phase of the PIN Study (PIN3 and PIN3plus) were completed in December 2005. The following are some of the characteristics of the cohort of women recruited (N=2006).
- 22% of the women are African American, 69% are white, and 9% self-identified as in other racial groups.
- Mother’s age ranged from 16 to 47, with 6% age 16–19, 18% age 20–24, 28% age 25–29, 33% age 30–34, and 16% age 35 and over.
- 71% of the women were married, 24% were single, and 4% were divorced, separated, widowed, or unreported.
- Completed years of education among mothers included 8% with <12 years, 36% with 12–15 years, and 56% with 16+ years.
Of the 1942 (96.8%) women on whom delivery information was available:
- 14.6% (N=284) of the women delivered prior to 37 weeks completed gestation.
- 9.9% (N=192) had a low birth weight baby (<2500 g), with 2.6% very low birth weight (<1500 g), and 7.3% moderately low birth weight (1500–<2500 g).
